Going Beyond Thermal – Optional Electrical Testing

Going Beyond Solar Thermal Imaging  – Optional Electrical Testing

At Thermography Services UK, we specialise in the certified inspection of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Our services are designed to help system owners, operators, and stakeholders verify performance, identify faults early, and maintain compliance with international standards, all without disruption to day-to-day operations.

We conduct all thermal inspections in strict accordance with IEC 62446-3:2017, the global benchmark for solar thermography. This standard outlines the correct procedures, environmental conditions, and reporting structure required to perform meaningful, repeatable thermal imaging assessments. Our inspections are carried out by certified Level 3 Master Thermographers using high-resolution, radiometric infrared cameras, capable of detecting temperature anomalies with precision, even on complex or large-scale installations.

By detecting issues such as:

  • Localised module hotspots
  • Shading-related thermal gradients
  • Soiling patterns
  • Bypass diode faults
  • Delamination and internal cell defects
  • String dropout or uneven heating

…we help asset owners and maintenance providers take informed action to avoid potential system underperformance or failure.

Going Beyond Thermal with Optional Electrical String Testing

For clients requiring a deeper level of diagnostics, we offer string-level electrical testing using industry-grade, IEC-compliant test instruments. These tests are conducted in line with IEC 62446-1:2016 and IEC 61829, covering key electrical parameters such as:

  • Open-circuit voltage (Voc)
  • Short-circuit current (Isc)
  • Insulation resistance (IR)
  • Polarity verification
  • I-V curve tracing

This non-invasive testing is performed at the DC string level, usually from a combiner box or inverter connection point, and does not require roof access, inverter disassembly, or on-site shutdowns. The electrical data collected can be correlated with thermal imagery to provide a comprehensive health check, ideal for performance reviews, handover inspections, insurance verification, and preventative maintenance planning.

A Structured Approach You Can Rely On

All of our inspections are carried out under a formalised Survey → Analysis → Reporting framework:

  • Survey: Site review, environmental checks, and data collection using thermal and/or electrical test instrumentation.
  • Analysis: Fault classification, data correlation, and interpretation in line with IEC protocols.
  • Reporting: Structured, standards-aligned documentation with thermal imagery, electrical readings (if applicable), anomaly descriptions, and prioritised recommendations.

Our reports are formatted to support:

  • Warranty and performance claims
  • Insurance documentation
  • Scheduled maintenance and fault rectification
  • EPC/O&M handover documentation
  • Asset lifecycle and performance benchmarking

We do not carry out remedial electrical or system repairs. Our role is to deliver accurate, independent inspection data to support informed decision-making by your appointed contractor, installer, or O&M provider.
